Larry Kert and Carol Lawrence
The stage partnership that created Broadway's original Tony and Maria—and returned to the stage together more than three decades later.
West Side Story, 1957
Kert and Lawrence were cast together after an audition that later became part of West Side Story lore. Their work gave the musical a romantic centre amid Jerome Robbins' kinetic staging and the Bernstein–Sondheim score.
The Ed Sullivan Show, 1958
On 2 November 1958 they brought the balcony scene and “Tonight” to a national CBS audience. The Paley Center preserves a catalogue record of the broadcast, and the Ed Sullivan site's history describes the resulting public response.
Together Again, 1990
In October 1990 Kert and Lawrence reunited at Rainbow and Stars in Rockefeller Center. Contemporary coverage noted that they were sharing a stage together again more than three decades after West Side Story. Lawrence later described Kert as her favourite leading man.
